Dracut Firefighters Plan Activity Day and 9/11 Remembrance

DRACUT — Fire Chief Richard Patterson and the Dracut Fire Department would like to invite the community to Dracut’s Old Home Day and Firefighter Activity Day this Saturday, and to a memorial service on Monday at the Town’s Sept. 11 Memorial on Jones Avenue at Broadway Road.

Old Home Day and Firefighter Activity Day will be held on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., rain or shine, at the Dr. Christos Daoulas Education Complex on Lakeview Avenue.

Old Home Day and Firefighter Activity Day have been held in collaboration between the Old Home Day Committee and the Fire Department since 2001, and the events will once again be joined as the Fire Department offers a variety of educational activities and challenges during Old Home Day.

The Department will have its Student Awareness of Fire Education (SAFE) Trailer on hand to help youth learn about how to react in a fire, as well as several pieces of fire apparatus on display for the public.

The Department will also offer Dracut youth a chance to participate in an obstacle course that mimics challenge courses firefighters must complete during training. Youth will be able to try on firefighter gear, drag hose lines, and try to get through an obstacle course designed by firefighters.

Dracut Firefighters will also continue their tradition of participating in Old Home Day’s opening ceremony on Saturday at 9 a.m.

On Monday, at the Town’s Sept. 11 Memorial, which includes a piece of steel from the World Trade Towers, firefighters will hold a brief memorial service to all those lost in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, in particular Capt. John Ogonowski, of Dracut, and the 343 firefighters who lost their lives in the attack.

The memorial service will be held at 8:46 a.m. to coincide with the time the first airplane struck the towers. The memorial is located outside the Dracut Fire Department Station 2 at Jones Avenue and Broadway Road.
