Jenness Ends Suspense Early

The biggest Lowell election  mystery remaining, other than how the voting will turn out, was quickly solved yesterday when District 4 City Councilor Wayne Jenness pulled nomination papers.

Jenness was one of several incumbents and challengers to show up to the Election Office Tuesday, the first day papers were available. To that point, the two-term Councilor had been the only incumbent to not publicly declare his intent to seek re-election, leading to much speculation in the political “bubble.”

Sean McDonough, another downtown resident, officially declared his candidacy June 1 and also pulled paperwork yesterday, setting up a runoff in November’s General Election. Should another candidate in the District enter the race, it would necessitate a Preliminary Election to narrow the field on September 9.

From here, all candidates have until July 22 to pull paperwork and have the requisite number of signatures certified to be officially placed on the ballot.

Other than the mystery surrounding Jenness’ status, no other unexpected names showed up to City Hall to launch their campaigns yesterday.
