Jaime, fifth grade, was all smiles during In Control, a summer STEM activity in which campers were put in the driver’s seat by discovering how Artificial Intelligence is imbedded in everyday road trip items like GPS, as they created their own Control Panel to send secret Morse code messages.
Lowell – Lowell Community Charter Public School (LCCPS) is excited to announce the award of a grant from the Nordson Corporation Foundation to support our out-of-school-time STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math) programs.
The mission of the Nordson Corporation Foundation is to improve the quality of life in communities by supporting education programs and initiatives that enable individuals to become self-sufficient, thriving, active participants in the community. The Nordson Corporation Foundation’s primary focus is education, and it offers support to non-profit organizations that cultivate educational curricula and experiences that foster job readiness and paths to aspire to higher education.
The Nordson Foundation grant will enable LCCPS to continue to offer a weekly STEM club program after school and a four-day STEM camp during spring vacation. STEM clubs at LCCPS are among the most popular programs offered after school and during vacation times, and students’ interest in science as a future endeavor is growing, as some are heard to say, “I like science!” and “I want to be a scientist!”
“Last year, we implemented a new hands-on science curriculum in grades K-4, and this year, we are adopting a new middle school science curriculum that consists of robust, research-based science instructional materials which will enable our students to engage as scientists do to apply what they are learning to explain the world around them. Our after-school STEM programs are an extension of the science curricula taught during school hours and provide our students with an opportunity for deeper learning as they experience an array of STEM projects.” Nicholas Leonardos, Executive Director.
LCCPS sincerely appreciates the continued support that our STEM programs receive from the Nordson Corporation Foundation and the expanded interest in STEM among LCCPS’ students as a result!
