“It has been an unbelievably rewarding experience to see this club and my students grow, come together, and truly create a sense of family this weekend,” said Club Advisor and English teacher Shelby Coe. “Every kid who wanted time on the mic was able to get it, sharing their personal stories with grace, challenging stereotypes, and causing others to think critically about important challenges in our society.”
As a result, the Club has been invited to perform at the State House to support funding on urban school districts.
“Our win feels so good but it feels even better to have so many other young poets come up to our kids and say how much they appreciate them, their work, and how inspired they are,” Coe added. “It’s also amazing to hear that we are known as the nicest, most welcoming team in the teen slam circuit!”
In addition to the team win, Coe was awarded the “Transcendent Coach’s Award.”
For those of you interested in checking out these impressive young poets, The LHS Poetry Club will hold their showcase event in the Freshman Academy’s Burgoyne Theater on Friday May 31 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
