The Lowell High School Distinguished Alumni Committee is proud to announce the 20th Annual Distinguished Alumni Awards Ceremony, recognizing outstanding graduates who have made significant contributions in their fields and to the community.
Mary Elizabeth “Lizzie” Ordway, Class of 1846, was a pioneering educator and women’s suffrage advocate. As one of the first “Mercer Girls,” she helped shape education in Washington Territory, opening Seattle’s first Central School in 1870. Ordway also championed women’s rights and became the first woman elected superintendent of schools in Kitsap County, leaving a lasting legacy.
Rita Sharcoff Mizner, Class of 1942, was a dedicated advocate for public education in Lowell. A co-founder of the Lowell Federation of Civic Organizations on Education and Reading is Fundamental (RIF), she worked tirelessly to promote literacy and educational improvement. Honored by Senator Paul Tsongas and the City of Lowell, her legacy of service continues to inspire the community.
B. Douglas Townshend, Jr., Class of 1952, was a beloved music and Choral Arts teacher at Lowell High School, where he inspired students with his motto, “Keep music in your heart and you’ll have harmony in your life.” Beyond teaching, Doug composed the official song for Lowell’s sesquicentennial and directed choirs at local churches. His legacy of music, education, and community service continues to inspire generations.
James Cassin, Class of 1964, dedicated his life to education, community service, and family in Lowell. He served as Superintendent of Greater Lowell Technical High School and was deeply involved in the community through his leadership roles in local organizations and as a coach. James’s legacy of service, including 30 years in education and his work with various Lowell institutions, left a lasting impact on the city.
JuanCarlos Rivera, Class of 1997, has over 28 years of experience in youth development, dedicating his life to empowering young people and strengthening his community. Currently serving as the Deputy Executive Director for the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Lowell, JuanCarlos has been recognized for his leadership in youth violence prevention and has earned numerous awards for his contributions. A graduate of UMass Lowell, he remains deeply involved in community service and advocacy.
The event will be held on Thursday, October 24, 2024, at 1:00 PM in the John Abraham Gymnasium at the Riddick Athletic Center.
The ceremony is open to the public, and all community members are invited to attend this prestigious event to celebrate the achievements of the honorees. Complimentary parking will be available at the Ayotte Garage, and guests are asked to bring their parking tickets to Lowell High School for validation.
