Lowell’s Fireworks Rolling Down River

Lowell – The City of Lowell will hold a Fourth of July celebration on Tuesday, July 4, 2023, from 5:00PM to 9:30PM at Boarding House Park, 40 French Street, in downtown Lowell.

All are welcome to the free, family-friendly event, featuring live music and entertainment, leading up to a fireworks finale after the sun goes down. Tee and the Gents and Xtine and the Intents will hit the stage, and food trucks parked along French Street will offer food and drink for purchase. Cirque de Light will roam French Street with a variety of street performers and face painting, and Bubbles McGee will delight the crowd with a magical bubble experience. The Office of Cultural Affairs and Special Events will be on hand in the Like Lowell tent with more information about visiting Lowell.

“We’re beyond excited to bring our Fourth of July celebration to Boarding House Park this year,” says City Manager Thomas A. Golden, Jr. “We’re looking forward to a fun evening filled with good food, music, and celebrations with neighbors, friends, and family. We’re grateful to the National Park Service for their support in bringing these festivities to a venue ideally suited for reflecting on how far we’ve come as a city.”

Lowell’s Independence Day Celebration had previously been held up the road at LeLacheur Park, which recently changed ownership to UMass Lowell. The venue change will allow UMass Lowell’s planned renovations of the ballpark to continue unimpeded.

Special thanks to Nancy Donahue, Mahoney Oil, Eastern Salt Company, Jeanne D’Arc Credit Union, Lowell Five Cent Savings Bank, Enterprise Bank, The Demoulas Foundation, The Greater Merrimack Valley Convention & Visitors Bureau, and all of our other generous sponsors!

The rain date is scheduled for Friday, July 7, 2023. For event information and updates, please visit: https://www.likelowell.com/4th-of-july

Boarding house park??? So many tall buildings all around. The Boulevard would be much better.

  2. John says:

Would love to see them back on the river near the outdoor concert band stand, right on the water.
Many happy Memories at that location including the famous Arthur Fidler concert

  3. Rock Fortin says:

The boulevard is the ideal place, the fireworks can be seen from both sides of the river, access is easier,as well as set up,I would much rather have it there.

  4. A says:

The reason they moved from the boulevard was because it frightened the hell out of the animals at the mspca which is right there. To transfer all of the dogs and cats to another place because of the fireworks was logistically difficult.

  5. Nancy flynn says:

Yes I think they should be back at the Boulevard on the river is the best

  6. Donald D. says:

I agree with these comments, best location ever has been across from Heritage Ice Cream, it’s the perfect location for ALL.

  7. Christie Ferguson says:

One of the main reasons the fireworks are no longer on the boulevard is because of the animals at the Lowell humane society. Many people don’t realize that the sounds from fireworks are hurtful to animals ears. Animals have very sensitive hearing. After years and years and years of having the fireworks on the boulevard they decided to move them further down the river. Hey you don’t get me wrong I grew up near heritage ice cream. I used to love just sitting in my front yard looking at the fireworks. I’m glad they’re not up this way anymore. After a while you get sick and tired of the crowds of people all the time Between events and carnivals

  8. Richie says:

They were shooting them off directly in front of the humane society. Would be better if they shot them from the soccer fields next to the Rourke Bridge. Plenty of room for people to watch from the other side of the river.

  9. Rm says:

So where exactly are they lighting off the fireworks please

  10. Teddy Panos says:

We asked. The answer: From the river walk behind Boarding House park

  11. Suzanne says:

Having the other festivities in Boarding House Park is a great idea!! I am however with everybody else. I don’t think having the fireworks there is logical. I wish the powers that be would ask the average citizens that utilize such events, would perhaps ask our opinions beforehand and at least listen to the reasoning behind our thoughts and ideas and feelings.

  12. Judy M Edney says:

Why is the city selling all the former spots to the U Mass Lowell? The Tax base is killing the taxpayers. Making it hard to find places to shoot the fireworks off. No matter where you shoot them off some animals will be freaking out.

  13. Devon says:

Now they are being set off behind the building I live in, and where 100s more live with animals who are terrified as well. This is not a good area to set them off and it’s not fair for the 100s of people who live there

  14. Adrien says:

We contacted Wayne Jenness who said that the fireworks are NOT going to be launched from the downtown-side River Walk, but rather on the northern bank (Centralville side) of the river.

  15. Teddy Panos says:

Thank you for the clarification, Adrien. Councilor Jenness also reached out to us. I incorrectly interpreted the Manager’s response, which did specify the “Centralville side of the walk way.” We apologize for any confusion and will post a more prominent clarification

  16. Robert Lajoie says:

I don’t think the fireworks should be shot off by boardinghouse park. Many people like myself do have pets that are terrified of the noise as well. Why are they in centralville? How about at Cawley stadium instead? I’m tired of the noise, traffic and trash that are foisted upon us all the time

  17. Katherine Davis says:

Is the more open area behind Tsongas Arena the approximate launcing site from the river? Wondering if the north & south walkways are safe for children, being right along the river. Doesn’t seem that area can accomadate even 1,000 people. So many people throw their trash on ground, now it’ll end up in the river. Cawley would be better, safer, access easier w/ plenty of FREE prkg.plenty of seating & entertainment & games, music.

  18. Seán says:

To John, the Soccer fields by the Rourke Bridge would be a good idea, but its still close to the Humane Society’s animal rescue building by UMass. So the further away from there, the better. Would be nice if they had fund raising events and we’re able to get enough donations to replicate their building to another location in the city.

  19. Taylor Leathers says:

Lol SOOOOO where are the fireworks getting lit off????
