Sovita Atis hopes folks in Dracut and surrounding communities are ready for a Haitian sensation.
She opened her new restaurant, Vita’s Fritay, in the Tennis Plaza, 1734 Lakeview Avenue, in May to bring authentic Haitian cuisine to town.
Dracut Economic Development held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on June 7 to welcome Vita’s Fritay to town.
So what does Haitian cuisine include? Well, it might help to know that “fritay” literally means fried food.
“The specialty is fried food,” Vita said. “Fried plantains, fried pork, fried chicken, fried turkey. Fried everything.”
You can also get spaghetti and hotdogs, spaghetti and chicken or spaghetti and herring, a Haitian meatball, a burger, a hot dog and more.
Vita’s Fritay is open seven days a week, from noon to 9 p.m. Two of Vita’s sisters, Antonne and Chrislene, will be helping at the restaurant.
In fact, Antonne once owned a restaurant in Haiti, which is where Vita learned how to cook.
Since Vita came to the United States when she was 16, she stated to cook for friends and cater their events.
“When I moved here, I was still cooking,” she said. “People liked my food, so I did catering. Finally, I said, ‘I should just open my own restaurant.’”
Vita and her husband, Mysto, have three children – Violeta, 7, Leo, 5, and Leah, 13 months.
