Notable Initial Agenda for New Council

After being sworn in Tuesday morning, the new Lowell City Council holds its first meeting that evening with a light agenda, albeit still a notable one.

The first motion that caught my eye was the one that wasn’t filed.

In fact, none of the four council motions were submitted by Corey Robinson, meaning we’ll be spared the tabling/bundling procedural drama and fallout that played out over the last three meetings featuring multiple Robinson motions.

The final motion (5.4) is the debut motion filed by incoming District 8 Councilor John Descoteaux, and it potential packs quite a punch.

Descoteaux, who is also the subject of two other agenda items surrounding his resignation from the License Commission and retirement from the School Department as reported earlier today, is asking the City Manager to “Coordinate With The Superintendent Of Schools To Investigate And Evaluate The Feasibility Of Consolidating City And School Departments.”

The word “consolidating” is of particular interest to yours truly, as it points to a potential effort to save money for the taxpayers by potentially eliminating (the harsher word for consolidating) jobs.

To what extent the city and school departments can be consolidated remains to be seen, but given Descoteaux’ experience working in the public schools Central Office, I’d be willing to wager a penny or two he has specific areas in mind.

Whether the political will is there to cut staff remains to be seen, but given Descoteaux made that his inaugural motion to be discussed just hours after he’s inaugurated suggests he’s not entering his Freshman term with the intention of avoiding controversy.
