Tugbiyele Sets Sights on New Office

Bobby Tugbiyele, who ran for City Council in 2021, is making another run at public office. Except this time, he’s doing so as a District 2 School Committee candidate.

The Downtown resident has yet to make a formal declaration, but his intentions were revealed by State Senator Ed Kennedy during a speech he made at a fundraising event for Senate President Karen Spilka in Lowell earlier this afternoon. Tugbiyele did update his Facebook Political Account today, posting the words “More to come…” along with blue and yellow hearts. Blue and yellow were the signature colors of his campaign material during the 2021 Council run.

Tugbiyele becomes the first declared challenger to incumbent Eileen DelRossi, a political newcomer herself in 2021 who surprised many with her victory over Hillary Clark. Clark had been an at-large School Committee member under the previous system, which did not include districts.

However, a third candidate is seriously considering a run of his own in District 2.

Gerry Nutter, a School Committee member in 2018-1029, announced on the WCAP Morning Show he now hosts that he is weighing another run for office. Friends of Nutter who have spoken with him about his intentions have told InsideLowell he’s “almost definitely” going to run.

If he does, that would necessitate a preliminary election, which is triggered by having a minimum of three candidates running in any School Committee or City Council District.
