Pay to Play?

The “Play” ransomware group returned to the web early this morning to claim they have partially published confidential data obtained in a cyber attack on the City of Lowell. The group also threatened to upload a full data dump if there is no “reaction.” (view their post below)

City Manager Tom Golden did not respond to questions surrounding the latest “Play” claim. Instead, he released a short statement saying “At this time, the City of Lowell continues to work with our partners in the Federal and State law enforcement.”

Golden also acknowledged the situation, which he continues to refer to as a “cyber incident” will cost the city money, as like many municipalities, Lowell has never carried Cyber Insurance.

He also says the city is working on establishing credit monitoring for city employees “very soon” through LifeLock, which already offers service to the workforce.
