“Points of Light” Returns to Ecumenical Plaza

The Seventh Annual Points of Light Cultural Celebration will be held on Saturday, May 11th from 5:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. at Ecumenical Plaza (near 282 Suffolk Street). The event is family-friendly and free admission.

Points of Light celebrates Lowell’s diverse cultures through food, music, dance, and more. Attendees personalize floating lanterns with their artistic skills, messages of hope, and memorials for loved ones. These lanterns are then floated on the Western Canal after sunset – creating hundreds of points of light.

This year’s festival includes performances by Jay Ortiz, Morgana Mirage, Malissa Lach, the Hellenic Academy, Whisper Kpop Dance Crew, the STEM Academy Color Guard, the LCCPS Afro-Latin Marimba and Percussion Ensemble, the LCCPS Step Team, and Sam Hy (Genocide Exkp) and Sam Pow (Sage Rock). There will be roving performances by Cirque de Light and Darren the Comedy Magician. xTine and the Intents will headline the festival, performing after the lantern launch.

Attendees can also visit the Pollard Memorial Library’s Bookmobile, craft and learn cultural games with the Lowell National Historical Park, participate in two public art projects by artists Jay Hungate and William Turville, and visit the new lantern walk! Food and drinks will also be available for purchase.

Lanterns will launch after a brief speaking program at 8:00 p.m. For more information, detailed schedule, and ways to get involved visit www.pointsoflightlowell.com

About Points of Light Cultural Celebration

Points of Light is a spring celebration of unity and renewal that brings together the food, music, and traditions of Lowell’s diverse cultures. The centerpiece of the night is a special ceremony in which participants personalize water lanterns that will be released onto the Western Canal, creating hundreds of floating points of light. The festival is coordinated by a committee of volunteers and community organizations including the Cambodian Mutual Assistance Association, Coalition for a Better Acre, DIY Lowell, Hull Street Energy (Boott Hydropower), the Lowell Housing Authority, and the Lowell Waterways Vitality Initiative. Points of Light operates under the fiscal sponsorship of the Coalition for a Better Acre. It was previously known as the Points of Light Floating Lantern Celebration
