In continuation of Lowell’s celebration of public art and support of artists, internationally recognized Filipino artist Allison Hueman will paint a large-scale public mural titled “Looms and Legacy” at the Leo A. Roy Parking Facility (100 Market Street) from September 14-19.
The piece, will honor Lowell’s city’s 19th century textile history and Lowell’s mill girls who powered the industry’s prosperity – blending the city’s past with fresh, modern artistic expression. Hueman has created vibrant public murals adorning buildings across the globe.
The project underscores Lowell’s ongoing commitment to uplifting artists, fostering creativity, and bringing vibrancy to public spaces for the community to enjoy.
It also highlights Lowell’s dedication to preserving history and honoring the women who played a pivotal role in shaping the U.S. Industrial Revolution. The mill girls, often young and single, were essential to the factory workforce, despite enduring exploitation, harsh working conditions, and frequent wage cuts.
