State Senator Kennedy Passes

Ed Kennedy, who represented the 1st Middlesex District in the Massachusetts State Senate since 2019, passed away from complications due to pneumonia last night at Lowell General Hospital.

Kennedy had reportedly been in and out of the hospital since early September. He’d also dealt with a number of other physical ailments in recent years, including breaking his collarbone after a fall while visiting Kalamata, Greece in 2022 as part of a Sister City collaboration with Lowell.

Most recently, he’d suffered a broken arm earlier this past summer.

Kennedy served two stints on the Lowell City Council, from 1978-1985 and again from from 2012-2018, before winning election to succeed Eileen Donoghue as State Senator in 2018. He also served as Middlesex County Commissioner from 1989-1996.

Kennedy is survived by his wife Susan, two children, Eddie and Christina, and three grandchildren. He was 74-years old.

This is such sad news for me and anyone who knew him. He was a good guy who I met some fifty years ago around the time he entered local politics. We had music in common as well as horseback riding and many other things. Was always there for people and I loved him. My condolences to Susan and their children. Rest in peace Ed.
