TEWKSBURY — The following statement was released Friday evening by Ryan Columbus, Chief of Police for the Town of Tewksbury.

“After several months of conversations with community members and a review of our automated license plate reader system, the Tewksbury Police Department has decided to end its relationship with Flock Safety and stop using the system.

The concerns raised by residents have weighed heavily in this decision.

It has become clear that this technology does not have the community support needed to continue its use. Although it has tremendous value in helping us investigate serious crimes, we believe stopping its use is the right decision until the Massachusetts Legislature or the courts establish clearer guardrails.

We remain committed to investigating crime, protecting victims, and maintaining the community’s trust.”
