Last week I was walking down Middle Street and much to my delight, all of the lampposts magically lit up in unison. This may sound a little dramatic (admittedly I have a flair for that every once in a while) but I couldn’t help but stop and smile to enjoy the first sign (of many) of the holidays in the Mill City!
Fast forward a few days later to Lowell’s official kick-off to the holiday season, the City of Lights. I had the privilege (and fun!) of emceeing the parade with Teddy. The crowd, the floats, and the enthusiasm among dignitaries and residents alike further solidified how magical the holidays in our great City truly are.
Here are just some of the reasons Lowell is so magical around the holidays (cue the song “These are a few of my favorite things!”):
- The iconic smokestack Christmas tree (my absolute favorite thing!).
- City Hall outlined in lights looking its finest with Peace on Earth Lowell and beautiful wreaths hung for all to see.
- Downtown Lowell frosted with lights and wreaths on every available lamppost.
- The windows in so many Downtown Lowell businesses dressed to holiday perfection in order to welcome shoppers in to select fun and unique holiday gifts.
- The red and green tinsel trees in the Market Basket parking lots and the Salvation Army bell ringers spreading cheer and hope (even when it’s freezing!).
- The windows at UMass Lowell’s Mark and Elisia Saab Emerging Technologies and Innovation Center lit up in green and red on Christmas Eve and Christmas.
- The Holiday Open at City Hall hosted by the City Manager and Mayor with enough decorations to make you feel like you’ve been transported to the North Pole – Santa included! (It’s on December 13th from 3-6pm this year.)
- Holiday shopping at Lowell’s many small businesses and galleries (including Soup and Shop at the Brush Art Gallery and Holiday Open Studios at Western Ave).
- Holiday décor at many of Lowell’s amazing restaurants including Cobblestones (a must see!).
- And of course, the Boston Pops at the Lowell Memorial Auditorium.

So glad you named the market basket tinsel trees !! Those make me so happy
I love the wreaths on the light posts! The trees with the white lights adorned bring a classic Christmas feel to the downtown!
A Christmas Carol at the Merrimack Repertory Theater!
We had a couple in from out of town recently and took them to a few spots in downtown Lowell. They were amazed by the way the streets were lit up and the wreaths on the light posts. It was a great night to show them Lowell.
