The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) is announcing temporary traffic impacts for drivers using Central Street over the Pawtucket Canal on Wednesday, March 8.

On March 8, between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. traffic will be temporarily halted in order to facilitate the installation of new structural steel bridge beams as part of Phase 2 Bridge Reconstruction.

Drivers using the Central Street Bridge will be temporarily halted in both directions to allow for the steel beams to be positioned across the bridge and safely hoisted into position. Once each beam is secured in place, traffic will return to a normal pattern while the next beam is prepared for placement. Police details will be utilized for traffic control during the traffic shift. All work is scheduled to be completed in one day, prior to 3:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 8.

This work is part of a $15.3 million project for the reconstruction or rehabilitation project of 5 Pawtucket Canal bridges in the City of Lowell.  Work is expected to be completed in late fall 2023.

Those traveling through the area should expect delays, reduce speed and use caution.

Appropriate signage and messaging will be in place.

The schedule for this work is weather dependent and subject to change without notice.
