Mona Tyree, the Centralville neighborhood resident who entered the 16th Middlesex State Representative race March 14, made her withdrawal from the contest official with a Facebook message late Tuesday night.
Tyree’s withdrawal was rumored last Thursday and Friday, when Lowell City Councilor Corey Robinson threw his hat into the ring.
Despite telling InsideLowell at the time that she was still collecting signatures and not withdrawing, multiple sources indicated the campaign would not continue.
“After a lot of thought and many meaningful talks with my family and people in our community, I have decided not to run for the 16th Middlesex District State Representative seat,” Tyree wrote in her social media statement. “Given the limited time and the many responsibilities in my life that require more attention right now, I believe I can best serve by continuing to volunteer and support meaningful causes that are truly needed in our community.”
Her departure leaves Robinson and Lorena Betts, the North Chelmsford resident who has been campaigning for the seat since last September, as the only officially declared candidates in the Democratic primary.
Republican Karla Miller, who ran against the current seat holder Rodney Elliott in 2022 and against Ed Kennedy for State Senate in 2024, has also pulled paperwork for the race.
Elijah Russell, a Pawtucketville resident who was gathering signatures to run as an Independent, told InsideLowell this morning he is no longer collecting signatures and has decided not to run for the seat.
