Winning Wines for Under $20 – Rose

by Ellen Andre

Ready for Spring and Rose’ Season?

When I realize that May is almost here and the Kentucky Derby is approaching, it reminds me that rose’ wine season is upon us.

I love this time of year because it signals spring..warmer weather…outdoor activity…grilling…refreshing lighter wines such as sauvignon blanc, vinho verde, unoaked chardonnay and of course rose’.

Many people think of rose’ as the white zinfandel of the old days, which it definitely is not.  Let me tell you, I drank a lot of that awful white zin and would never go back.

The first rose’ I’d like to highlight is called Hampton Water. Oddly, I first thought of Hampton Beach being in New England but alas it is from the Languedoc region in France.   It would be quite a shock to find a good rose’ from Hampton Beach.  It is a partnership with Jon Bon Jovi, his son Jesse and winemaker Gerard Bertand.

This wine is pretty complex with Grenache, Cinsault, Mourvedre and Syrah grapes.  I love this blend because it gives the wine so much more character and flavor.  Although still quite light and refreshing, it has distinguished itself by listing in Wine Spectator on their Top 100 list.  It’s the first time a rose’ has made it to the list in 25 years.

You can also try this summer cocktail with Hampton Water Rose’:

2 oz. Hampton Water
2 oz. tequila
1.5 oz. lime juice
1/2 oz. strawberry simple syrup
1/2 oz. triple sec

Coincidentally the next wine is also produced by Gerard Bertrand.  It is: Cote des Roses Rose’.  Also, made in France using grenache, cinsault and syrah grapes.

It’s a pale pink with aromas of summer fruits and floral notes with a hint of grapefruit.  This wine is great on its’ own but easy does it, truly goes down like water.

The bottle itself is unique with a rose embossed on the bottom.  A fun keepsake.

Lastly, Josh Cellars produces a crisp, refreshing and bright rose’.  In typical Josh Cellars style, a great value.  It has flavors of strawberry and stone fruits.  As with most rose’ wines it pairs well with shellfish, seafood and subtly spiced dishes.

Have a great spring and let us know what you’re drinking!  Salud!
