Lowell’s team went through its inaugural Professional Women’s Hockey League season much like the horse from the 1970’s chart topping America song; with no name.
That changed this morning, when the league unveiled new names for all six of its teams, with the PWHL Boston entry now named the Boston Fleet.
The announcement was made by team captain, Hillary Knight, during ABC’s Good Morning America program.
The Fleet will be joined by the also newly named Minnesota Frost, Victoire de Montreal, New York Sirens, Ottawa Charge and Toronto Sceptres.
All of the squads went through the 2024 season simply named PWHL, followed by the big city they called home.
Of course, the Mill City was well aware that the PWHL entry played its home games at the Tsongas Center and enthusiastically adopted them as Lowell’s.
By season’s end, the Tsongas was rocking as more than 6,300 fans showed to watch the championship series deciding game on May 29.
The team’s X page (formerly Twitter) touts the name as paying homage to Boston’s maritime history, its fate resting largely on the sea. The forward leaning logo is said to resemble an anchor and a sail representing momentum, with “waves of resilience” added in.
The PWHL has yet to release its 2024-25 regular season schedule, though a source tells us late November is the anticipated start date for the Mill City entry.
