LOWELL — City of Lowell electricians finished installing approximately 50,000 feet of holiday lights on Merrimack, Market and Central streets and at Lowell City Hall on Sunday, readying the downtown for the City of Lights festival and the holiday season.

The city’s electricians work year round to maintain over 9,000 street lights across the city, the city’s traffic lights, and more. In the months leading up to the holiday season, they also install and maintain the holiday lights that twinkle downtown.

Lights along Merrimack, Market and Central streets have been installed in previous weeks and months, and on Sunday city electricians used a 180-foot boom lift to finish the major project by installing lights and decorations on Lowell City Hall.

City workers used the boom lift to hoist decorations and fresh lights to the heights of City Hall, installing and then testing them.

The work wraps up less than a week before City of Lights brings thousands to the downtown for a parade and holiday festival.

“I want to recognize everyone who works behind the scenes to make City of Lights special each year,” said City Manager Thomas A. Golden, Jr. “Our city electricians install and maintain literally miles worth of lights to bring our downtown to life, and their efforts are appreciated, especially since they did this work on a Sunday to avoid interrupting business at City Hall. They missed out on the Patriots victory to get this work done for the residents, and I’m proud of them.”

The 2025 City of Lights festival will include a hot chocolate contest, holiday market, photos with Santa, holiday treat decorating, roasted marshmallows, a parade and more. The events culminate when City leaders flip a switch and light up the downtown and Wannalancit smokestack at the conclusion of the parade.
