Boyle Runs Reverse Away from LHS Sideline

Just two years after returning to the Lowell High sidelines, Scott Boyle resigned as Head Football Coach of the Red Raiders.

Athletic Director Scott Ouellet confirmed the news to InsideLowell this afternoon, revealing that the coach broke the news to his team Wednesday at the conclusion of a morning workout session.

“Coach Boyle and I have had many discussions over the past month regarding his future as coach of our football team,” Ouellet wrote in a statement. “Personally, I am sad he will no longer be our coach. Coach Boyle was clearly a difference maker and as good of a coach as you could ask for. He gave a lot to our team and kids, and the results speak for themselves. He will be missed. I wish him and his family the very best.”

Ouellet did not offer a reason for the decision, saying “I don’t want to speak for him.” Boyle did not respond to our requests for comment.

The coach came back to his alma mater for a second stint at the helm in January of 2024. He helped resuscitate the moribund program, leading them to a 4-7 record his first season and a 9-2 mark in 2025, which included a postseason berth.

The Red Raiders pull off an upset playoff victory at Methuen, before the road ended in the state quarterfinals with a loss at Springfield Central.

The upset win over Methuen caught the attention of the New England Patriots, who honored Boyle as their Coach of the Week on November 10. The recognition earned the LHS football program a $1,000 donation on behalf of Robert Kraft and the Patriots Charitable Foundation.

Boyle’s first go-around on the Red Raiders sideline came from 1997-2006, where he amassed 68 victories, third most in school history. With 13 more wins over the last two year, he passed Walter Nelson in second place, trailing only the legendary Ray Riddick who coached Lowell to 182 wins.

In his statement, Ouellet indicated Boyle will continue to work with juniors and seniors on recruiting and college placement.

The Athletic Director will immediately meed with Head of Lowell High School, Mike Fiato, to develop a plan for the future of the football program.

Congratulations! This success story is a nice way to retire from coaching.

  2. Scott says:

It’s a great loss for the kids in the LHS football program, and the program itself. He cared about the kids. He pushed them, to make them better players and people. He worked as hard as anyone to get the program back on track. Which he and his staff did.

I’ve been coached by both Boyle and Quellet. I respect what they continue to do to carry the torch. The future looks bright for all who are willing to fight adversity as coach Boyle once said.
