Lowell, MA – As the start of a new school year approaches, five major bridges in Massachusetts, including the John E. Cox Memorial Bridge on Bridge Street in Lowell, will light up in blue in honor of Massachusetts’ Boys & Girls Clubs and the over 75,000 children and teens that they serve.
The Cox Bridge will illuminate in blue in the evening on Friday, September 1, 2023. The other statewide bridges participating are the Zakim Bridge and Longfellow Bridge in Boston, the Fore River Bridge in Quincy/Weymouth and the Burns Bridge in Worcester.
For over 120 years, Boys & Girls Clubs in Massachusetts have been providing safe and affordable out of school time programs for thousands of children. When school is out, the Boys & Girls Clubs are there to answer the call. As we head back to a new school year, Clubs will continue to serve the youth of our Commonwealth. The light on the bridges is a reflection of the light Clubs bring into our children’s lives every day.
The bridge lighting is part of the Massachusetts Department of Transportation’s bridge lighting initiative and the Lowell Waterways Vitality Initiative. The Boys & Girls Club of Greater Lowell recognized the Greater Lowell Community Foundation for supporting this initiative and area youth.
