Tyngsborough — Superintendent Jill Davis is pleased to report that Greater Lowell Technical High School celebrated the opening of a new Gryphon Athletic Complex on Wednesday evening.

The new Gryphon Complex includes a multi-sport athletic turf field, new grandstands with a new press box and sound system and an 8-lane, 400-meter running track that surrounds the field, with all field events being incorporated within the facility.

The new stadium is also Americans with Disabilities Act compliant, and has six designated handicapped parking spaces near the facility entrance, and fully accessible bleachers. The complex will also feature a brand new field house with ADA compliant restrooms and a Snack Shack, all being built by students and staff in the GLTHS Construction Cluster.

The opening of the new Gryphon Athletic Complex means the school’s championship track and field program will for the first time in eight years be able to hold track meets at home, as well as invitational tournaments.

The complex’s grand opening was held Wednesday night at 5:30 p.m., prior to the start of a varsity football game against Lowell Catholic.

The complex will now be home to Gryphon Football, Cheer, Track and Field and will directly support Gryphon Soccer, Lacrosse, Field Hockey, and Cross Country. It will also support daily Physical Education classes.

In addition, the complex will also be available for recreational and community use which will impact many lives over the years to come.

“We value community partnerships and we want our campus to be viewed as a community hub bringing people together,” said Superintendent Davis. “As our Gryphon varsity Football team takes the field tonight, they will be making history as this complex will create opportunities for current students, alumni, community members and be a source of pride and inspiration for generations to come!”

Superintendent Davis thanked the school’s legislative delegation for helping to secure vital state funding, and said the athletic complex would not have been a reality if not for the advocacy and support of Sen. Edward Kennedy, and Reps. Rady Mom, Rodney Elliot, Colleen Garry, and Vanna Howard.

Superintendent Davis also thanked those who made the on schedule and within budget project happen, including Director of Plant Services Erik Gitschier, School Business Administrator Michael Knight, Athletic Director Mark White, Gale Associates and Heimlich Construction Corporation.

“The Gryphon Athletic Complex is a symbol of our robust Athletic and Health & Wellness Programs and our commitment to providing our students with the best possible resources to excel not only in sports but also in life,” said Superintendent Davis. “The lessons learned on this field and track — dedication, hard work, resilience, and perseverance — will extend far beyond the confines of sports, preparing our young men and women for the challenges they will face in their future endeavors and supporting their overall social-emotional health and well-being.”
