Help Us Complete Lowell’s Political Mt. Rushmore

For  year’s, I’ve wondered who local historians would place on a hypothetical Mill City version of Mount Rushmore, the monument to American Presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln.

Lowell’s history features numerous elected officials who have left their imprint on the city. Some have been memorialized by having their names attached to buildings and parks. Others, to streets and bridges.

But America’s Mount Rushmore is reserved for the best of the best; the Father of our country (Washington), the Father of the Declaration of Independence (Jefferson), the leader who freed the slaves and guided America through its Civil War (Lincoln), and the first “modern” President, who built the Panama Canal, won a Nobel Peace Prize and established numerous national parks (Roosevelt).

In the same vein, so, too, must Lowell’s Mount Rushmore be reserved for the creme de la creme, the best of the best. If your tenure in office was short, you best have done something historic in that time and your post-political career best be marked with acts or projects that are woven into the city’s legacy.

As such, I hereby declare the first two slots occupied.

Save your “No Kings” protests for someone else. This is my media kingdom, and as such, I decree Paul Tsongas and Marty Meehan a place on our mountain top.

If you don’t know the city well enough to understand why their spot is not up for discussion, I have no time to explain and you have no business participating in the rest of this process…or living here, for that matter.

Off with your heads!

Now then, the final two spots. This is where you come in.

We’ve set up a poll question with a list of nominees for you to vote on. Select the Lowell political figure you believe deserves a place on our mountain top.

We’ll tally the votes, then reveal the winners during next Friday’s edition of The Daily Pulse Live at 10am, which you can view here on InsideLowell.com or on our YouTube Channel.

So your task is set. Click here to vote in our poll, tune in Friday April 17 and join our live discussion by texting the Pulse Line at 978-PULSE-IN. That’s (978) 785-7346 to chat with The Pod Squad and let us know who you selected.

Rita Mercier. She has always voted for the betterment of the people.
She always considers how a particular change affects the people.
Lots of people in Lowell know her by name and what she represents and she knew their names too and took the time to talk to them.
I vote for Rita. Agree with the choices of Paul Tsongas and Marty Meehan.
