Meehan Tapes “State of UMass” Address at GLTHS

When it came time to tape his annual State of UMass Address, University President Marty Meehan returned home.

Meehan recorded his speech at Greater Lowell Technical High School, making the Commonwealth Collegiate Academy a main theme of his address. The program, which was founded at GLTHS and includes ten other Massachusetts high schools, allows more than 400-students to experience the rigor and pace of a college level curriculum.

Faculty from UMass Lowell and UMass Dartmouth offer over 30-courses as part of the initiative and collaborated with high school teachers to ensure curriculum was aligned with their other classes.

The former United States Congressman and former UMass Lowell Chancellor also spent a significant portion of the speech advocating for the value of a college education, a reaction to a recent Wall Street Journal and University of Chicago poll that found 56% of Americans believe the cost of a college education is no longer worth the investment.
