At a raucous Lowell City Council meeting on January 20th, City Councilor Sean McDonough filed a motion seeking information on ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) operations in the city over the last 18-months.
Among the items requested in the motion that was unanimously passed is a list of people the agency has arrested.
The council eventually voted unanimously to invite Police Superintendent Gregory Hudon to address questions at a future meeting.
While that appearance is still in the works, the United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) released a Tweet yesterday promoting a new website listing what they describe as the “worst of the worst” arrested by ICE. Within that list are at least some of the names sought by the city council.
The new DHS site appears to contain the names of over 25,000 individuals in total, where they were arrested and crimes they have been convicted of. A search tool allows users to obtain specific information by state, country of origin, or general search terms.
Entering “Lowell” into the search terms leads to a page listing seven men arrested in the Mill City, though it provides none of the other information requested by the council motion, such as the total number of arrests ICE made in the city, where those individuals are being detained, how those arrests were conducted or whether any cooperation was sought from or offered by Lowell Police.
Among the convictions highlighted on the specific Lowell page are Indecent Assault and Battery on a Child Under 14, Aggravated Assault with a Weapon, Drug Trafficking, Heroin Smuggling, Burglary and Domestic Violence.
A scan of our other coverage areas (Chelmsford, Dracut, Tewksbury and Westford) did not turn up any names on the DHS website.
Given the national debate raging over immigration enforcement, and with Massachusetts politicians like Governor Maura Healey and Boston Mayor Michelle Wu taking executive actions to restrict ICE operations, the response to Councilor McDonough’s motion from Chief Hudon is sure to be closely monitored here in Lowell. With the new DHS website, at least part of that response has been provided.
