The Comeback Kiiiiiiid?

Toss another familiar name into the list of potential Lowell City Council candidates; Corey Belanger.

The former City Councilor tells InsideLowell he is “considering a run for an at-large seat” in the upcoming election. Belanger previously served two terms on the council, winning a seat in 2013 and following that 7th place finish up with an 8th place finish in the 2015 race, before losing his seat in 2017.

Belanger ran again in 2019, barely finishing out of the money in 10th place, just 18-votes shy of winning a seat. He sat out 2021, the first election under the city’s new hybrid system. Belanger has also served on the city’s Opiate Crisis Task Force, Co-Chairing it since its inception in 2014

Asked when a decision might  be forthcoming, Belanger said he’s “in no rush to commit one way or the other,” but that he still has “a strong interest in serving the city once again.”

Belanger’s interest is the latest development in an at-large race that began to heat up with news that popular incumbent Councilor, John Drinkwater, would not seek re-election. Drinkwater is the only incumbent not committed to seeking office again, as we reported early in January.
