LOWELL – The Massachusetts Pirates have signed former Merrimack College defensive lineman James Nyamwaya for the 2024 season. Nyamwaya took part in rookie minicamp with the Pittsburgh Steelers this past season as an undrafted free agent.

The 6’5″, 310 lb. defensive tackle never started in any of the ten games he played for the Warriors. In his only season at Merrimack he recorded 27 tackles (20 solo) with 6.5 tackles for a loss, 5.5 sacks with one quarterback hurry, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. His signature game was a five tackle, three sack performance against Long Island University. The Andover, MA native, by way of Kenya, was an All-Northeast Conference Second Team selection in 2022 as his 5.5 sacks tied him for fourth most in the conference.

Nyamwaya came to the United States at the age of ten and did not start playing American Football until high school at Bridgton Academy.

From 2018 through 2021 he attended Division III Curry College in Milton, MA. He played three seasons there, losing the 2020 campaign to the covid pandemic. In 26 games with the Colonels he had 136 tackles with nine for a loss and 3.5 sacks. He also forced a fumble, recovered another and broke up one pass. He was named to the All-Commonwealth Coast Conference First Team as a freshman in 2021.
