With the November midterms behind us and the new year upon us, we here are InsideLowell now turn our attention to the 2023 municipal election.
The 8 District and 3 At-Large Lowell City Councilors are up for re-election this November and could potentially face a preliminary election in September as well. With that in mind, we reached out to all of the incumbents and asked if they are committed to seeking re-election this year.
Mayor Sokhary Chau, Councilors Erik Gitschier, Wayne Jenness, John Leahy, Rita Mercier, Vesna Nuon, Corey Robinson, Dan Rourke, Kim Scott and Paul Ratha-Yem intend on running.
At-Large Councilor John Drinkwater, on the other hand, tells InsideLowell he is undecided.
Asked when he would make his decision, the Councilor said “I don’t know that I can give you a time frame, but I am actively considering professional and family commitments, as well as the commitment it takes to run and serve on the Council, and expect to make a decision soon.”
Drinkwater added he wants to decide soon in order to allow any potential candidates whose own decision might hinge on the incumbent’s plans plenty of time to map out their plans.
